New Harvest Matcha

Only available during this time of year, New Harvest Matcha allows you to savour the flavour of freshly picked tea leaves. Unlike our matcha offerings available throughout the year, each of which has its own consistent flavour that is created through a process in which the tea leaves are picked, processed, and rested for a summer to mature, New Harvest Matcha is distinctive in that it allows you to savour the flavour that is unique to each year’s new harvest. Being able to enjoy the different tastes of each year’s harvest is one of the true joys of this matcha. For example, 2022’s New Harvest Matcha had a well-rounded fragrance, while 2023’s matcha possessed wonderful mellow flavour.

Bursting with freshness, and full of sweetness.

New Harvest Matcha 2024 has wonderful sweetness. The first thing that catches your eye when you open the package is the bright colour, which seems to be bathed in light. As you pour on hot water and start whisking it, the fresh, even more lush colour characteristic of shincha really stands out. When you breathe in shincha's characteristic verdant fragrance and taste it, you'll be surprised by its sweetness. Then, you notice a clear umami flavour wash over your palate. It also has a refreshing aftertaste with little sharpness, making it a matcha that is enjoyable for anyone to drink. It greatly increases the number of opportunities for enjoying Japanese tea, limited only by your imagination, such as starting your day with matcha in the morning or taking a break to relax.

How/when to enjoy it?

I prepare it in different ways to enjoy a variety of taste experiences. As basic usucha it has a mild taste with subtle sweetness, which is just right for relaxing. Preparing it with cold water brings out more of the verdant flavour of shincha. I drink it that way when I want to get energized, like I would with a very cold gazpacho. Preparing the matcha as koicha, or on the thick side, allows me to savour the most umami. I drink it that way as my morning matcha or in order to change gears and really concentrate.

How do Ippodo staff enjoy it?

I like preparing it as Shaken Matcha when I want to savour its sweetness in a more casual way. All I have to do is put the matcha and chilled water in my bottle or flask (2g of matcha and 200 ml of chilled water), and shake it in order to enjoy the fresh taste of New Harvest Matcha!
