What teas are in this set?
This set contains two popular teas that are aromatic. Each is sure to be a soothing delight over the winter holidays.
Obukucha is a refined genmaicha green tea that is blended every year for release in the winter. It is a blend of roasted rice and select green tea leaves, and it features a smooth taste and a light, toasty aroma.
Gokujo Hojicha is a roasted tea with an almost sweet, caramelly fragrance. When brewed, it releases a rich aroma that completely fills the room. It’s a favourite in Kyoto and among those who usually drink coffee.
How to enjoy it?
We like to bring this set as a small gift to holiday parties and get-togethers this season. Each of these teas is light and has an accessible taste with low bitterness. We find them popular for everyone from children to grandparents.
Pair Obukucha with toasted mochi, a traditional favourite for Japanese New Year’s celebrations. Gokujo Hojicha is a good match for pastries like croissants that are typically enjoyed with black tea or coffee.

The Story of Obukucha
Obukucha which means "Good Fortune Tea," is an auspicious tea enjoyed around New Year’s.
The tradition of enjoying Obukucha goes back 1000 years. In 951, a serious epidemic swept through Kyoto. In an effort to relieve the suffering, a Buddhist priest distributed tea to the people. It is said that the emperor ushered in the New Year with a special cup of tea that year. Ever since, it has been a Japanese tradition to drink Obukucha with loved ones for good fortune in the new year.
