Each year we are excited to taste shincha, our special release of freshly harvested sencha tea. Its youthful energy is distinct from the mature character of our regular sencha brands.

What teas are in in this set?

This set is especially recommended for those new to loose-leaf Japanese green teas. Experience the vibrancy of Shincha, a sencha green tea, and the smoothness of Rimpo, a gyokuro green tea with many parallels to matcha.
Gyokuro is, like matcha, a premium green tea grown in shaded tea field. After harvesting, matcha is made by grinding up the tea leaves into fine powder, whereas gyokuro is made by rolling and drying the leaves to become loose leaf tea. The naturally sweet, umami-rich taste of a gyokuro reminds us of a premium matcha’s misty, moss-green, and even briny elements. Like matcha (and Shincha), gyokuro also has a balance of caffeine and theanine, giving us an energizing yet calming feeling when we drink it.

Gyokuro: We selected Rimpo, a classic Ippodo gyokuro, for this set. It is a medium-rich blend with a smooth mouthfeel and pleasant umami.
Shincha: A limited sencha tea that is released right after harvest with no resting process. It has a vibrant character with an amazingly fresh fragrance, with brilliant umami and eye-opening greenness.

How to enjoy it?

Set aside a quiet afternoon, and brew one at a time. Savour them slowly, and focus on how umami lingers pleasantly on the tongue. With just-warm temperature water, you can draw out their full richness and complexity, and re-brew the leaves several times. Relax, and enjoy.
