What is Obukucha?

Obukucha is a special genmaicha green tea that is made available every year for the holidays.
Combining roasted rice and specially-selected green tea leaves, this Ippodo favourite has a pleasant toasty fragrance and a light, crisp aftertaste.
Compared to the regular genmaicha, Obukucha uses less roasted rice and higher-quality green tea leaves, giving us a soft toasty aroma and an elegant, soft taste in the cup. We recommend serving it with lunch or at tea time while gathered with friends and family this season.

  • The Story of Obukucha

Obukucha which means "Good Fortune Tea," is an auspicious tea enjoyed around New Year’s.
The tradition of enjoying Obukucha goes back 1000 years. In 951, a serious epidemic swept through Kyoto. In an effort to relieve the suffering, a Buddhist priest distributed tea to the people. It is said that the emperor ushered in the New Year with a special cup of tea that year. Ever since, it has been a Japanese tradition to drink Obukucha with loved ones for good fortune in the new year.

  • Lid and body, a perfect fit

Each kyusu is one-of-a-kind, and the lid and the body fit each other perfectly. This prevents leaks from the top when pouring.

  • A large, fine ceramic filter

The ceramic strainer inside is wide and has a large number of holes. Pouring is quick, and few leaves are able to get past.
