Now Available: Obukucha, Good Fortune Tea

Traditionally drunk in Japan at New Year's Day as an auspicious tea, our Obukucha is sold from November 15th.

In 951, a serious epidemic swept through Kyoto. In an effort to relieve the suffering, a Buddhist priest, Kuya, distributed tea to the people. It has been said that Emperor Murakami ushered in the New Year with a special cup of tea that year.
Since then, it has been a Japanese tradition to drink Obukucha (that means “Good Fortune Tea” in Japanese) around the New Year.

Our version of Obkucha is a special high-grade Genmaicha. It uses higher grade green tea leaves and a smaller proportion of roasted rice than our year-round Genmaicha to bring out the flavour of the leaves. And, we have packaged this tea in the traditional New Year's colors of red and white to match the season.

We hope that you and your loved ones enjoy Obukucha in happiness and health, while looking towards the new year.
