The Story of Obukucha
Obukucha which means "Good Fortune Tea," is an auspicious tea enjoyed around New Year’s.
The tradition of enjoying Obukucha goes back 1000 years. In 951, a serious epidemic swept through Kyoto. In an effort to relieve the suffering, a Buddhist priest distributed tea to the people. It is said that the emperor ushered in the New Year with a special cup of tea that year. Ever since, it has been a Japanese tradition to drink Obukucha with loved ones for good fortune in the new year.
